SAAB IS SAVED!

As the last issue of Classic Car Mart went to print, we reported that the future of Saab was looking bleak, following the collapse of at least one buy-out bid and the announcement from owner General Motors that it was to begin winding down the company. But all of that changed on January 26, when GM finally agreed to sell Saab to Dutch sports car maker Spyker – much to the delight of Saab fans around the world.

John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances, announced: ‘General Motors, Spyker Cars and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome.’ As part of the agreement, Spyker will form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, with the sale of Saab expected to be completed by mid-February.
Meanwhile, current Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne has caused controversy by suggesting that the future of Saab looks bleak as an independent manufacturer. ‘I think it’s very difficult to be a niche player and profitable. Marginal players will continue to be marginalised. We cannot build on hopes and dreams.’  But Spyker boss Victor Muller was quick to hit back: ‘We have a lot of work to do. Mr Marchionne is entitled to his opinion, and it is up to us to prove him wrong.’
