Feature PURPLE PEOPLE EATER Steve Wilson discovers there’s more to this much-modified 1972 MGB than just a flamboyant finishThe outrageous purple finish is the first thing that you notice about Paul Green’s 1972 MGB Roadster. There were a couple of purple options briefly available from the factory, like 1973’s Black Tulip and ’74’s Aconite, but the glittering shade on Paul’s car is much more contemporary.

‘It’s Amaranth Pearlescent, a colour from early ’90s MGFs,’ says Paul. ‘The car was sprayed that way just before I got it, which was about ten years ago.’ And while the white stripes were occasionally seen on MGs contesting at Sebring in the US, for Paul their attraction is twofold: as well as looking good, they also cover up the damage you get round the edge of the bonnet when you’re working on the engine.
