You can get into a Land Rover project for £1500 (or less), but you really don’t get much for you money. Far better to spend £2500 on something half-decent with tax and MoT. Want a show-stopping minter? Budget anywhere between £10k and £15k.

 

WHICH IS WHICH?

  • S1 80in 1.6-litre – 50bhp, 80lb-ft, 24mpg, 50mph top speed
  • S1 80in 2.0-litre – 52bhp, 101lb-ft, 23mpg, 52mph top speed
  • SII 109in 2.1-litre diesel – 52bhp, 87lb-ft, 30mpg, 50mph top speed
  • SII 88in 2.3-litre petrol – 77bhp, 124lb-ft, 23mpg, 60mph top speed
  • SIIA 2.7-litre 6cyl petrol – 85bhp, 132lb-ft, 15mpg, 73mph top speed

RUNNING GEAR

  • Vague steering could be down to worn  ball joints or bad adjustment
  • Check chrome surface of swivel housings  isn’t pitted (caused by broken seals)
  • Inspect bolts on wheel hubs – they’re  quite often missing or broken
  • Semi-elliptic springs can suffer from rust
