Triumph TR7 1974-1981

MarchCLVALUES

The TR7 was the most modern of all the TRs and was the biggest seller by far with over 112,000 produced. Despite that, it’s still far cheaper than any of the ‘traditional’ TRs which makes it something of a bargain for lovers of ’70s style. Budget on less than £1000 for a restoration project, with running and presentable coupes starting at £2000. Convertibles in good condition start at around £3000, with a premium for Sprint-engined or V8 cars. Top whack for the TR7 is around £4500 for the coupe and £6000 for the convertible, for which you should be able to secure the very best examples.

ENGINE & GEARBOX

  • Head gasket issues were common on Triumphs from the ’70s so make sure the cooling system is up to scratch.
  • If the head does need to come off, the alloy casting can be hard work to separate from the iron block. The water pump can be tricky to change at home too.
  • The engine needs a 30:70 mix of anti-freeze to avoid internal corrosion.
  • The timing chain needs changing every 25,000 miles.
  • Water in the fuel tank can cause it to rot from the inside. The sediment will enter the fuel system and can cause misfires.
  • New tanks can be bought but fitting them involves dropping the rear axle.
  • The four-speed cars are low geared but lively. A conversion to the SD1 five-speed box makes the car quieter on the motorway at the expense of acceleration.
  • Automatics are less desirable but very reliable. Just check the fluid isn’t brown and burned.

PARTS
Parts supply is superb for the TR7. Panels and subframe assemblies are all available and even new original shells are still available: You’re looking at around £3000 for the coupe and £4500 for the convertible.
