London to Cape Town - Day 25 Report PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 February 2012 00:00

Dave Gough and Richard Phillipson were one of the only crews not to reach Namibia last night after running a wheel bearing en route. We are into the longest day, driving over 1,000 kms down The Caprivi Strip. It's arrow straight to far horizons through thick green vegetation - two-metre tall grass lines the road. Good feeding ground for herds of elephants. David Tomlin and Nick Adcock stopped their Land Rover to allow a bull elephant to cross the road.

On the map, The Caprivi Strip appears like a strange finger pointing inland, narrow but long, a relic of the times when Africa was carved up in Colonial fashion to give Germany access to the sea from the centre through their adopted Namibia.

Modifying a MG Midget

MarchModThe Midget is one of those classics which can offer something for everyone. In standard form it’s an ideal first classic with affordable (just) insurance for the younger driver and a size small enough to squeeze into the most cluttered garages. In modified form though, it can be everything from a fast road weekend plaything to a Caterham-baiting lightweight rocket: specialist Frontline Developments has completed road cars for customers packing over 240 bhp thanks to a K-Series engine transplant.

It’s sensible to start with the basics though and in the case of the Midget, just like its bigger brother the MGB, this means updating the suspension. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the basic set-up, which is just that: basic, using a live rear axle and leaf springs. It’s more the details which let it down, specifically the lever-arm dampers and the raised ride height on the rubber-bumpered 1500 cars.

Triumph TR7 1974-1981

MarchCLVALUES

The TR7 was the most modern of all the TRs and was the biggest seller by far with over 112,000 produced. Despite that, it’s still far cheaper than any of the ‘traditional’ TRs which makes it something of a bargain for lovers of ’70s style. Budget on less than £1000 for a restoration project, with running and presentable coupes starting at £2000. Convertibles in good condition start at around £3000, with a premium for Sprint-engined or V8 cars. Top whack for the TR7 is around £4500 for the coupe and £6000 for the convertible, for which you should be able to secure the very best examples.
