| JAMES HUNT A35 FOR AUCTION |
| Thursday, 02 June 2011 15:39 |
Do you like the look of this Austin A35? Well the good news is that it is to be offered at Silverstone Auctions event on July 23. But why are we telling you this we hear you ask. It was, in fact, owned by former world motor racing champion James Hunt and was his daily transport at the time of his death in 1993.
The car – a 1967 A35 Van with rear windows and a ‘Countryman’ conversion has been in storage for 18 years (it was acquired by the vendor in 1993), and at the time of acquisition still had James’s last cigarette butts in the ashtray, along with a sprinkling of ‘Trill’ birdfood; James used the A35 to carry his beloved budgerigars to shows. The car starts and runs, but is thought to be in need of some mechanical attention, and the interior is described as ‘well worn’. The car comes with a registration document in James’ name as well as a large number of receipts for work carried out during his ownership, plus books and magazines making reference to James Hunt and his A35. We at Kelsey know James’s association with this car as Chris Graham – now editor of our sister publications Practical Poultry and Practical Pigs was at the time a motoring writer. Chris interviewed James about his car shortly before he died, and well remembers how much James enjoyed driving the A35, including the cars ability to ‘slide’ and take on much faster sports cars around London. Also included in the sale will be James 1975 Dutch Grand Prix-winning Formula One Hesketh 308/2. |
