GHOSTLY EPIC DRIVE
Thursday, 29 September 2011 00:00

NovNewsB&WEarly September saw several Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts and their owners successfully recreating an epic drive designed to prove Rolls-Royce’s claim of building the best car in the world a century ago.

The bold assertion was based on accomplishments in September 1911, when chassis No.1701 Silver Ghost drove nearly 800 miles from London to Edinburgh and back – in top gear – and achieved performance and fuel consumption figures that easily bettered those of its rivals.

Recreation of the event was organised by Nick Naismith, member of the 20-Ghost Club, who told us: “1911 was a very important year for Rolls-Royce. The Prince Henry Tour and the London to Edinburgh trial helped create the Silver Ghost’s reputation as the best car in the world. As the oldest Rolls-Royce club in the world, the 20-Ghost Club has been planning the re-enactment of the Prince Henry Tour and the London to Edinburgh trials for the past two years.”

The Silver Ghosts taking part in the recreation did so under similar conditions to 1911, by carrying passengers, measuring fuel consumption and reliability and only using the direct top gear.
